ReplyDeleteYour Great grandfather Thomas Widdison was a gunner on the NZ battle ship HMS Achillies. His ship was destroyed by the German battle ship the Admiral Graf Spee in the Battle of the River Plate on the 13 of December 1939. It was the 1st naval battle in the 2nd World War. He survived but was badly injured and remained in a hospital in Egypt for 3 months. He was then honorably discharged.
